Over the past few years, Daniela Schardinger has had the privilege of serving on the Innovation Equity Forum (IEF) Steering Committee — a joint initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

This work has involved multiple working groups, ongoing global collaboration, and dedicated in-person engagements in Washington, D.C. — all centered around a shared objective: identifying critical gaps in women’s health, advancing equity, and supporting the innovations women deserve.

At the outset, the conversation around women’s health was still relatively narrow, largely focused on maternal health and early life stages. Early contributions from members of the IEF, including Daniela Schardinger and Keren Leshem, helped broaden this perspective — advocating for a more comprehensive understanding of women’s health across the full spectrum of life.

This expanded vision has since become a defining part of the global conversation.

A significant milestone in this journey is the recent $2.5 billion commitment to women’s health research and development, announced by the Gates Foundation. The initiative was highlighted at a live event in Boston, bringing together global leaders in women’s health and innovation.

During the event, Dr. Anita Zaidi acknowledged the role of the Innovation Equity Forum and highlighted the Opportunity Map — a framework developed to identify the most critical, addressable gaps in women’s health and guide high-impact investment decisions.

This moment reflects years of collective effort to shift priorities, elevate unmet needs, and create momentum around a more holistic approach to women’s health.

While there is still significant work ahead, this milestone represents meaningful progress — and a clear signal that women’s health is increasingly recognized as a global priority for innovation, investment, and long-term impact.
