Joining the Innovation Equity Forum (IEF) Steering Committee — a joint initiative of the NIH and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — is an opportunity to contribute to a broader global movement focused on redefining women’s health.
For decades, women’s health has largely been framed through the lens of reproduction — centered on fertility, pregnancy, and childbirth. While these areas remain essential, they represent only a portion of the health challenges women face throughout their lives.
A more comprehensive approach is long overdue.
Across the world, millions of women are affected by conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, and endometriosis — conditions that significantly impact quality of life, yet remain underrepresented in research, innovation, and funding.
Expanding the definition of women’s health means addressing these gaps. It requires moving beyond a narrow scope and recognizing women’s health as a lifelong, multidimensional priority — encompassing physical, emotional, and long-term wellbeing.
This shift also creates an opportunity for innovation.
Bringing new technologies, research, and solutions into areas that have historically been overlooked will be critical to advancing care. At the same time, it requires stronger collaboration across sectors — from policymakers and researchers to founders and investors — to ensure meaningful progress.
The work of the Innovation Equity Forum reflects this direction: elevating unmet needs, encouraging broader investment, and supporting a more inclusive and impactful vision for women’s health globally.
Being part of this effort is not just about participation — it is about contributing to a shift in how women’s health is understood, prioritized, and advanced.
